Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word helps children from age 3-1/2 to grade 4 articulate a heartfelt response to the Word of God, making the words of scripture memorable and giving a joyful feeling to the celebration through singing.

Each Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. mass, the children gather with their parents in the congregation and remain until the Opening Prayer after the Gloria. The children then follow the minister out to a separate place for their own Liturgy of the Word. After the first reading and the Gospel have been proclaimed, there follows a reflection on the readings, where the children tell back the readings they have heard, and through questions from the leader learn to link that word with what is happening in their own lives. This is followed by the Creed and then the Prayers of Intercession, in which the children should be encouraged to pray for needs as they arise from the Gospel they have heard, and from their own lives. The children then return to their parents at the Preparation of the Gifts.

It is our hope that once the children hear the Word, share the Word, and sing the Word of God, they will never forget it; and with God’s help, it will become a permanent part of their lives.
